1966 Texas Western Miners
March 19, 2005 will represent the 39th anniversary of the 28th
basketball championship game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association ("NCAA")
in which Texas Western University (now the University of Texas at El Paso) basketball
team won the NCAA championship. Coach Don Haskins, Willie Cager, Harry Flournoy,
Bobby Joe Hill, David Lattin, Nevil Shed and Willie Worsley, along with their
teammates, stunned the University of Kentucky 72-65 and changed the course of
intercollegiate athletics In "the game that changed American sports,"
for the first time in a national championship event, an all-black team opposed
an all-white team. Texas Western's victory ended segregation in intercollegiate
sports.
