16TH ANNUAL BLACK HISTORY MAKERS AWARDS DINNER (cont.)
In recognition of the need to embrace both the after effects of the violent
demolition of lower Manhattan and the work that Associated Black Charities does
daily in helping less fortunate African Americans in New York City rise from very
dire and life-constraining circumstances, the Board of Directors selected Maya
Angelou's "Still I Rise" as the theme for the 16th Annual Black History
Makers Awards Dinner.
"Still I Rise," therefore, brings into
common view and balances the challenges arising from September 11 and the pre-existing,
on-going demands of New Yorkers for help in resurrecting lives stymied by a cauldron
of social ills. As well, it is especially resonant with the indomitable will and
spirit of African Americans and other New Yorkers to prevail against adversity.
