16TH ANNUAL BLACK HISTORY MAKERS AWARDS DINNER
Associated Black Charities will initiate the national observance of Black History Month in 2002 by renewing its effort to illuminate the urgent need to help eradicate both new and old social ills.
Our goal is to increase grants to our community-based health and human service member agencies in New York City by one million dollars. More than ever, therefore, we need your support to gather the financial and other resources to help restore the productive lives of fellow New Yorkers.

Makers Awards Dinner and reception at the Marriott Marquis hotel in
New York City.
Sponsored by Associated Black Charities, the Black History Makers Awards dinner pays tribute to and honors extraordinarily outstanding African Americans and persons of African descent whose exemplary character, professional achievements, and personal service to both the African American and world communities have made an enduring imprint and are a model for emulation by young African Americans.
The evening will feature the installation of H. Carl McCall and Dick Gregory as Black History Makers. Mr. McCall and Mr. Gregory will join a legion of past Black History Maker honorees, including United Nations Secretary General Koki Anna, Vernon Jordan, Justice Thurgood Marshall, and Colin Powell.
Mr. Gregory, the civil rights activist, author, and pioneering entertainer/comedian, cast new standards for topical content by African American comedians and, in so doing, developed crossover appeal for his brand of comedy.
Mr. McCall is the trailblazing public servant who was the first African American to be elected to statewide office in New York, the only active public official serving as a member of the board of directors of the New York Stock Exchange, and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
Mr. McCall and Mr. Gregory have been vigorous and life-long supporters of education, especially for the less fortunate. Throughout their lives, Carl McCall and Dick Gregory exemplified time and again New York's indomitable will and spirit to prevail against adversity. They personify the will to thrive, to prosper, and to succeed against the odds.
